Inside Joud by the Sea Zanzibar
Joud by the Sea is one of the newer resorts on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, but owner Ahmed Baki does not describe what he has created in Jambiani as simply another hotel.
When Naru visited Joud and spent time walking through the property with him, one phrase kept coming up:
“Barefoot, mindful luxury.”
That idea runs through the entire resort.
There are quieter garden and accommodation areas for guests who want to slow down, while the beachfront has a completely different energy with the infinity pool, restaurants, music and Drift Social Club.
For Ahmed, Joud was never supposed to be somewhere guests simply sleep.
“Joud is not about just being a hotel,” he told us. “We thought of creating a destination.”
Why Jambiani?
Before developing Joud, Ahmed and his partners explored different parts of Zanzibar looking for the right location.
Jambiani stood out because of its privacy, natural setting and relationship with the Indian Ocean.
The southeast coast is heavily influenced by Zanzibar’s tides. At high tide, the ocean returns towards the shore. At low tide, the landscape changes completely and the exposed shallows stretch towards the reef.
Ahmed sees that change as part of the experience.
Guests can swim when conditions allow, then experience a completely different coastline later in the day.
It is one of the reasons Jambiani works particularly well for travellers who enjoy the slower rhythm of Zanzibar’s east and southeast coasts rather than expecting the beach to look the same from morning until evening.

Two Different Sides of Joud
One of the most interesting things Ahmed showed us was how intentionally Joud was divided into different moods.
The accommodation side is quieter.
There is greenery, soft music and a slower atmosphere designed for guests who want to read, relax or simply switch off.
Walk towards the beachfront and the energy gradually changes.
There is the infinity pool, NomNom Bay, Drift Social Club and a more social atmosphere with music and DJs at particular times.
Even the sound system was planned around this idea.
Different parts of the resort have different speakers, playlists and volume levels so one guest can be relaxing quietly while someone else is enjoying the livelier beachfront.
Ahmed describes them almost as different destinations within the same destination.
That balance is one of the things that makes Joud interesting.
You do not necessarily have to choose between quiet Zanzibar and social Zanzibar.
Here, the idea is to have access to both.
The Tree That Shaped the Arrival
One of our favourite stories from the interview was about a tree.
When the Joud team first acquired the land, a mature tree was already standing near what would become the arrival area.
Instead of removing it, they decided to keep it.
The entire arrival experience was then designed around the tree, which Ahmed now calls the hotel’s “lucky charm.”
That story says a lot about the property.
There are plenty of carefully designed details throughout Joud, but the resort does not feel like it was created from a single hotel template.
Local artwork appears throughout the spaces, landscaping plays a major role in the atmosphere and the route from the accommodation towards the beachfront was deliberately designed to reveal the Indian Ocean gradually.
Ahmed wanted guests to reach the pool and ocean and have a genuine wow moment.
Inside the Rooms and Joud Villas
Joud’s accommodation feels spacious.
Ahmed told us that room sizes begin at around 40 square metres and extend to larger villa categories of approximately 110 square metres.
The two-bedroom Joud Villas are particularly interesting for friends, couples travelling together or families wanting more space.
Inside, there are separate bedrooms, shared living areas and private outdoor spaces with plunge pools.
But during our tour, Ahmed spent almost as much time talking about the smaller details as the rooms themselves.
Furniture was specially designed for Joud.
Artwork was individually selected.
Particular attention was given to the bedding.
Even the team uniforms have a personal connection to the family — they were designed by Ahmed’s daughter.
It is those details that reveal how he thinks about hospitality.
A guest may never consciously notice every individual decision, but together they determine how the hotel feels.
The Beachfront, NomNom Bay and Drift
The beachfront is where Joud becomes more energetic.
The centrepiece is the 35-metre infinity pool, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Nearby is NomNom Bay, the resort’s all-day dining restaurant.
Then there is Drift Social Club, where the atmosphere moves into drinks, music, DJs and a more social side of the Joud experience.
The contrast is deliberate.
You might spend the morning relaxing in the quieter garden side of the resort, move towards the pool for the afternoon and later find yourself at Drift as the atmosphere changes again.
Joud is not trying to be a silent retreat all day.
It is also not trying to be a beach club everywhere.
The experience depends on where you are within the resort.
Ahmed Baki’s Idea of Luxury
Ahmed has spent decades working in hospitality around the world, and one of the most interesting parts of our conversation was his definition of luxury.
For him, luxury is not primarily about expensive furniture, tableware or finishes.
“Luxury for me is not only the things that you can touch and feel,” he told us.
It is about the guest journey.
The service.
The atmosphere.
How comfortable someone feels.
And ultimately, what they remember once they leave.
That is where Joud’s idea of mindful luxury comes from.
The intention is not simply to surround guests with expensive things.
It is to create an experience that makes them want to return.

Ahmed spoke to us about future expansion at the Zanzibar property, including more accommodation, wellness facilities and a signature restaurant.
The wider brand is also being developed around different concepts including beach, wellness, adventure and heritage hospitality.
But Zanzibar is where the story has started.
And Ahmed is ambitious about what Joud can become.
One of the simplest things he said during our conversation probably captures the idea best:
“Joud is about making people happy.”
For a new hotel brand, that might sound simple.
But after walking through the property with him, it becomes clear how many decisions have gone into trying to make that happen.
