Naru Zanzibar Guide
Last verified: 5 October 2026
Zanzibar is much closer to the UAE than many travellers realise.
From Dubai, a nonstop flight to Zanzibar takes around 5 hours 40 minutes. Abu Dhabi also has direct Etihad flights to Zanzibar, with the airline's seasonal service now extended through 31 March 2027.
Zanzibar is also only one hour behind the UAE.
That makes the island ideal for a short escape from Dubai, a family holiday from Abu Dhabi, a honeymoon, or the relaxing end of a Tanzania safari.
But Zanzibar is not simply another tropical resort destination.
Where you stay can completely change the experience.
The tides are different from Dubai.
The north and east coasts feel different.
Stone Town feels completely different from the beach areas.
And trying to fit too much into a short UAE trip can actually make the holiday worse.
At Naru, our approach for UAE travellers is simple:
Choose the right coast. Choose one excellent hotel. Add a few memorable experiences. Leave enough time to actually enjoy Zanzibar.
This guide covers travelling to Zanzibar from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE, including flights, visas, mandatory insurance, where to stay, the best time to visit and how many nights we recommend.
If you would rather have the hotel, private transfers, experiences and — on selected trips — international flights arranged together, you can also explore Naru's Zanzibar travel packages.
UAE to Zanzibar: The Quick Answer
Are there direct flights from Dubai to Zanzibar?
Yes.
flydubai currently operates nonstop flights between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).
The direct flying time is approximately 5 hours 40 minutes, and flydubai currently lists daily Dubai–Zanzibar service.
Are there direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Zanzibar?
Yes.
Etihad Airways operates nonstop flights between Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Zanzibar.
The direct flight takes approximately 5 hours 40 minutes.
Etihad originally returned to Zanzibar as a seasonal service, but strong demand led the airline to extend the route through 31 March 2027.
Because airline schedules can change, always check your exact travel dates before booking.
What is the time difference between the UAE and Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is one hour behind the UAE.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi operate on UTC+4, while Zanzibar operates on UTC+3.
That makes jet lag almost irrelevant for most UAE travellers.
Do UAE residents need a visa for Zanzibar?
Your passport nationality, not your UAE residence visa, determines your immigration requirement.
A British citizen living in Dubai follows the rules for a British passport.
An Indian citizen living in Abu Dhabi follows the rules for an Indian passport.
A UAE citizen follows the rules for a UAE passport.
This distinction is very important.
Can UAE passport holders get a Zanzibar visa on arrival?
Tanzania Immigration currently lists United Arab Emirates nationals among travellers eligible for both online visa and visa-on-arrival facilities.
Always verify your nationality through the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa system before travelling because visa categories and immigration rules can change.
Is travel insurance mandatory for Zanzibar?
Yes.
Foreign visitors arriving in Zanzibar are required to obtain Zanzibar's mandatory inbound travel insurance.
For travellers flying directly from Dubai or Abu Dhabi into Zanzibar, arrange it through the official Zanzibar inbound insurance portal before travelling.
Do not assume your UAE health insurance, credit-card travel insurance or separate international travel policy automatically replaces Zanzibar's entry requirement.
How long should you stay in Zanzibar from the UAE?
3 nights: possible, but very short.
4 nights: good for a focused beach escape.
5 nights: one of our favourite lengths from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
6–7 nights: enough for a more complete Zanzibar holiday.
8–10 nights: ideal for slower travel, honeymoons or a Stone Town and beach combination.
For a more detailed breakdown, read our How Many Days in Zanzibar guide.
Why Zanzibar Works So Well From Dubai and the UAE
Dubai and Abu Dhabi already offer exceptional hotels, restaurants, beaches, pools and service.
So we do not think the purpose of flying to Zanzibar should simply be to find another five-star hotel beside the water.
The reason to choose Zanzibar is that it feels different.
You have traditional wooden dhows.
Swahili culture.
Historic Stone Town.
White-sand coastline.
Spice farms.
Fishing villages.
Tropical vegetation.
Coral reefs.
And a slower island rhythm.
You can leave the UAE and be beside the Indian Ocean the same day without crossing several time zones.
That combination is what makes Zanzibar particularly attractive from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Naru's View
A good UAE-to-Zanzibar trip should feel like you actually left the UAE.
If you spend the entire trip inside a resort that could exist anywhere in the world, you miss part of what makes Zanzibar worth travelling to.
The answer is not filling every day with tours either.
The balance is:
A beautiful hotel + enough resort time + a few experiences that actually feel like Zanzibar.
Dubai to Zanzibar Direct Flights
Dubai has one of the easiest nonstop connections to Zanzibar from the Gulf.
flydubai's Dubai to Zanzibar service operates between:
Dubai International Airport — DXB
and
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport — ZNZ
with a direct flying time of around 5 hours 40 minutes.
flydubai currently lists daily service on the route.
That gives travellers based in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates a particularly straightforward way to reach Zanzibar.
Should You Take a Direct Flight?
For a four or five-night Zanzibar holiday, our answer is usually yes.
A one-stop ticket can sometimes look cheaper.
But compare the saving with the time you lose.
On a ten-night holiday, spending extra hours connecting may be acceptable.
On a four-night holiday, a long connection can consume a meaningful percentage of the trip.
Naru's Rule for Short Trips
Protect your usable holiday time.
Do not save a small amount on airfare and then lose half a day of a short holiday unless the saving genuinely matters to you.
Abu Dhabi to Zanzibar Direct Flights
Abu Dhabi travellers also have a strong nonstop option.
Etihad's Abu Dhabi to Zanzibar service connects:
Zayed International Airport — AUH
and
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport — ZNZ
with a direct flying time of approximately 5 hours 40 minutes.
Etihad's seasonal Zanzibar service has now been extended through 31 March 2027.
Dubai or Abu Dhabi Departure?
If you live in Abu Dhabi and the Etihad service works for your dates, there may be little reason to drive to Dubai first.
If you live in Dubai, Sharjah or the Northern Emirates, flydubai will often be the more practical nonstop option.
The best departure airport is not necessarily the one closest to your home.
Look at:
Flight time.
Departure time.
Arrival time.
Return time.
Fare.
Baggage allowance.
And the number of usable holiday days your flight gives you.
Prefer to Book Zanzibar With Flights Included?
You do not necessarily need to organise your flight, hotel, airport transport and Zanzibar experiences separately.
Naru offers curated Zanzibar travel packages, including selected Dubai-to-Zanzibar packages where international flights are included.
At the time this guide was verified, Naru's package collection included:
Dubai to Zanzibar Luxe Escape
and
Dubai to Zanzibar Getaway Special
under the Flights Included collection.
Other Naru packages allow you to book your own international flights while we arrange the Zanzibar side of the trip.
Depending on the package, your trip can include:
Accommodation.
Private airport transfers.
Curated Zanzibar experiences.
On-island planning and support.
And, on selected Dubai packages, international flights.
Explore current Zanzibar packages from Dubai and the UAE.
Naru's View
A package should make the trip easier, not simply bundle more things together.
For UAE travellers, we look at the complete journey:
Flight timings + hotel + location + transfers + experiences + actual usable holiday time.
What About Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and the Northern Emirates?
Travellers from Sharjah, Ajman and the Northern Emirates should compare the entire journey rather than searching only from their nearest airport.
For many travellers in Sharjah or Ajman, travelling by road to Dubai International Airport for a nonstop flight can still be faster overall than choosing a connecting itinerary elsewhere.
From Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, compare:
Driving time to Dubai.
The direct flight schedule.
Connecting-flight options.
Parking or transfer costs.
And your Zanzibar arrival time.
The cheapest flight is not always the cheapest trip once lost time is included.
Dubai to Zanzibar Flight Time: Why It Matters
The headline flight time is approximately 5 hours 40 minutes.
But do not plan a short Zanzibar trip using flight time alone.
You also need to consider:
Airport check-in.
Arrival immigration.
Baggage collection.
Airport transfer.
Hotel check-in.
And how early you need to leave the hotel for your return flight.
This is why Naru plans around usable days, not just hotel nights.
A four-night booking with excellent flight timings can feel very different from a four-night booking with poor timings.
Is Zanzibar a Good Long-Weekend Trip From Dubai?
Yes, if you plan it properly.
For a four-night trip we would normally recommend:
One hotel.
One part of the island.
One or two main experiences.
No unnecessary hotel changes.
And plenty of actual downtime.
What we would not recommend is trying to combine Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, Matemwe, a safari and several boat trips inside four days.
Zanzibar rewards slower travel more than checklist travel.
How Many Nights Do You Need in Zanzibar From the UAE?
3 Nights
Possible, but rushed.
Choose one hotel and perhaps one main experience.
Do not change hotels.
4 Nights
A strong short break from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
A simple itinerary could be:
Day 1: Arrive and settle in.
Day 2: Resort day.
Day 3: One signature Zanzibar experience.
Day 4: Resort or one shorter activity.
Day 5: Depart.
5 Nights
For many UAE travellers, this is the sweet spot.
You have enough time for resort days, one ocean experience, one cultural or island experience and enough empty time that the holiday does not feel scheduled.
6–7 Nights
Now Zanzibar starts to feel like a complete holiday rather than a quick escape.
You can stay entirely on one coast or consider one or two nights in Stone Town followed by the beach.
8–10 Nights
Excellent for honeymoons, families and slower travel.
You have room for Stone Town, a longer beach stay, several experiences and completely unplanned days.
You can also compare these trip lengths against the current Naru Zanzibar travel packages.
Where Should UAE Travellers Stay in Zanzibar?
There is no single best area in Zanzibar.
There is a best area for the kind of trip you want.
That distinction matters.
For a deeper comparison before choosing a hotel, read our Where to Stay in Zanzibar guide and our Best Beaches in Zanzibar guide.
Pwani Mchangani — Best for a Polished, Quieter Resort Stay
For many UAE travellers, Pwani Mchangani is one of the first areas we would compare.
It works particularly well when the brief is:
Beautiful hotel.
Good facilities.
Beachfront location.
A quieter atmosphere.
A few planned experiences.
And plenty of resort time.
The important thing to understand is that this coast is tidal.
At low tide, the sea can retreat significantly.
Choose a property where you will enjoy the pool, room, restaurants and resort environment even when the water is farther away.
Matemwe — Best for Quiet and a Slower Escape
Matemwe is one of our favourite choices for travellers who genuinely want to slow down.
It feels quieter and less built-up than Zanzibar's busier beach centres.
It is also well positioned for ocean experiences around the Mnemba area.
Like much of the northeast coast, Matemwe experiences noticeable tides.
For couples, honeymooners or post-safari travellers who want calm rather than nightlife, that can be a very good trade-off.
Kendwa — Best if Easy Sea Swimming Is a Priority
If your idea of a beach holiday means being able to enter the sea more consistently throughout the day, compare Kendwa carefully.
The tidal effect tends to be less dramatic than on much of Zanzibar's east coast.
That makes Kendwa attractive to travellers who want the beach and swimming to be central to the trip.
Nungwi — Best for Activity and Convenience
Nungwi is one of Zanzibar's best-known tourist areas.
You will find more restaurants, activity, boat traffic, tourism infrastructure, nightlife and people.
Some travellers love that.
Others come to Zanzibar specifically because they want something quieter.
Know which traveller you are before booking.
Paje — Best for Social Energy and Watersports
Paje has its own identity.
Think kitesurfing, cafés, restaurants, beach bars and younger energy.
It is also strongly tidal.
Choose Paje because you like Paje, not simply because somebody told you it is one of Zanzibar's famous beaches.
Zanzibar Tides: What UAE Travellers Need to Understand
This is one of the biggest differences between a Dubai beach holiday and a Zanzibar beach holiday.
Much of Zanzibar's east and northeast coastline is strongly tidal.
At high tide you may see a turquoise ocean close to the beach.
Several hours later, the water can be far away.
Then it returns.
This is completely normal.
It does not mean the beach has disappeared or that something is wrong with the hotel.
Areas where the change can be particularly noticeable include:
Matemwe.
Pwani Mchangani.
Kiwengwa.
Paje.
Jambiani.
Naru's Tide Rule
Choose the hotel for low tide and the beach for high tide.
Ask yourself:
Would I still love this hotel when the sea is farther out?
If you love the pool, food, room, grounds, spa, shade and overall atmosphere, the tide becomes part of the experience instead of a problem.
If constant sea access is extremely important to you, compare Kendwa and suitable properties around Nungwi instead.
Read our full Zanzibar Tides guide before choosing your coast.
Do UAE Residents Need a Visa for Zanzibar?
This is one of the most misunderstood Zanzibar travel questions.
Being a UAE resident does not give you one universal Zanzibar visa rule.
Tanzania Immigration looks primarily at the passport you travel with.
For example:
A UAE resident travelling on a British passport follows the British-passport requirement.
A UAE resident travelling on an Indian passport follows the Indian-passport requirement.
A UAE citizen travelling on a UAE passport follows the UAE-passport requirement.
UAE Passport Holders
Tanzania Immigration currently lists the United Arab Emirates among nationalities eligible for both its online visa and visa-on-arrival facilities.
However, immigration rules, visa categories and fees can change.
Verify your current requirement through Tanzania Immigration before travelling.
Other UAE Residents
Check your own nationality.
Some passports are eligible for visa on arrival.
Some can use the Tanzania eVisa system.
Some nationalities fall within a referral-visa category and require advance approval.
Do not rely on:
Your friend's experience.
A social-media video.
Your UAE residency status.
Or rules for a different passport.
For a fuller explanation, read our Zanzibar Visa Requirements guide.
Passport Validity
Tanzania's official eVisa terms require applicants to hold a passport with at least six months' validity and at least one unused visa page when applying.
Check your passport early rather than discovering an issue shortly before departure.
Is Zanzibar Travel Insurance Mandatory From the UAE?
Yes.
For foreign travellers arriving in Zanzibar, mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance should be arranged before travel.
This is separate from your Tanzania visa.
And it should not simply be confused with:
UAE medical insurance.
Credit-card travel protection.
Airline insurance.
Or a separate international policy.
Use the official Zanzibar Insurance Corporation inbound portal rather than an unofficial third-party website.
Keep your insurance confirmation accessible while travelling.
Is Zanzibar Muslim-Friendly for UAE Travellers?
For many Muslim travellers from the UAE, Zanzibar feels culturally comfortable.
Islam is deeply woven into everyday life on the island.
You will see mosques throughout Zanzibar and hear the call to prayer.
Halal food is widely available.
Stone Town in particular reflects centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and wider Indian Ocean influence.
However, Zanzibar also has a large international tourism industry.
Many resorts serve alcohol.
Some international hotels may serve pork.
Food-preparation policies vary between properties.
If you have specific halal requirements, ask the hotel rather than assuming every resort operates the same way.
Outside beach resorts, particularly in villages and Stone Town, dress respectfully and remember that you are visiting a predominantly Muslim local culture rather than an isolated resort island.
When Is the Best Time to Travel From the UAE to Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is warm throughout the year.
But rainfall, wind and humidity change by season.
June to October
This is one of the easiest periods for a first Zanzibar trip.
Conditions are generally drier and more comfortable.
It is also popular, so good resorts can price accordingly.
January and February
Another attractive period for travellers who want tropical heat and beach time.
Expect warm conditions.
March to May
This period usually contains Zanzibar's heavier long-rain season.
That does not mean it rains every minute of every day, but it deserves consideration if your priority is a classic beach holiday.
November and December
Conditions can be mixed, with shorter rains possible.
There can still be excellent travel days.
Do not choose dates using weather alone.
Also consider:
UAE school holidays.
Hotel pricing.
Flight prices.
Wind.
The experiences you want.
And how busy you want the island to feel.
Zanzibar vs Dubai: What Will Feel Different?
The climate is tropical rather than desert.
The pace is slower.
Road journeys can take longer than the map suggests.
The east coast changes dramatically with the tide.
Outside large resorts, card acceptance is less universal than in the UAE.
Stone Town is historic, dense and walkable rather than modern and highly planned.
And not everything runs with Dubai-style speed.
That difference is part of travelling.
Do not go to Zanzibar expecting Dubai with palm trees.
Go because you want Zanzibar.
Is Zanzibar Good for Families From the UAE?
Yes.
But family trips should be planned differently from couples trips.
Look carefully at:
Family-room configurations.
Pool safety.
Shade.
Kids' facilities.
Meal plans.
Transfer distances.
Beach conditions.
And how much time children will spend in a vehicle.
For younger families, we would usually rather arrange two excellent experiences than put children into a different excursion every morning.
Zanzibar should still feel like a holiday.
Is Zanzibar Good for Couples and Honeymoons From Dubai?
Very.
The short flight, small time difference and tropical setting make Zanzibar particularly practical for couples based in the UAE.
For a honeymoon, we would pay particular attention to the trade-off between:
Room quality.
Privacy.
Private pool.
Beach quality.
Tides.
Food.
And overall atmosphere.
A private-pool villa on a tidal beach may be a better honeymoon for one couple.
A simpler room beside more consistently swimmable water may be better for another.
There is no universal answer.
What Should You Do in Zanzibar?
For a short UAE trip, do less than you think.
A few experiences will show you far more of Zanzibar than spending the entire trip at your hotel.
But filling every day defeats the purpose of coming to an island.
Sail on a Traditional Dhow
A dhow experience connects directly with Zanzibar's Indian Ocean identity.
At Naru, this is one of the experiences we particularly value because the island looks and feels different from the water.
Experience Mnemba's Waters
The waters around the Mnemba area are known for snorkelling and marine experiences.
Choose a responsible operator and remember that wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
Explore Stone Town
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most culturally important parts of a Zanzibar trip.
Its narrow streets, carved doors, historic buildings and trading history give context to the island beyond the beaches.
Visit a Spice Farm
Zanzibar's spice history is part of the island's identity.
A good spice-farm experience should be interactive rather than simply a walk through plants.
Explore Beyond the Resort
Depending on your interests, consider:
Jozani Forest.
A cultural tour.
Local food.
Horse riding.
Clear kayaking.
A private picnic.
Or another carefully chosen island experience.
Naru's View
For five nights, we normally prefer two main experiences.
For seven nights, perhaps three.
You do not need an excursion every day.
A Simple 5-Night Zanzibar Itinerary From Dubai or Abu Dhabi
Day 1 — Arrive
Private transfer to your hotel.
Check in.
No major activity.
Eat, swim, rest and settle into Zanzibar.
Day 2 — Resort
Do very little.
This is intentional.
Day 3 — Ocean Experience
Choose something such as a dhow sail or Mnemba-area experience.
Return to the hotel and keep the evening free.
Day 4 — Nothing
Pool.
Beach.
Spa.
Lunch.
Sleep.
This often becomes one of the best days of the trip.
Day 5 — Culture or Island Experience
Choose Stone Town, an island tour, a spice experience or something that suits you.
Day 6 — Depart
No last-minute attempt to finish Zanzibar.
There is nothing to finish.
If you want this structure arranged for you rather than building every element separately, compare the current Naru Zanzibar packages.
Should You Stay in Stone Town?
For a four or five-night UAE trip, not necessarily.
You can visit Stone Town without changing hotels.
For a seven-night or longer trip, spending one or two nights there before moving to the coast can create an excellent contrast.
Stone Town and a beach resort feel almost like two different trips.
If history, culture and food interest you, it deserves more than being treated as an airport stop.
What Currency Should UAE Travellers Take to Zanzibar?
The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling.
US dollars are also commonly used within tourism, particularly for higher-value travel services.
Cards are accepted at many resorts and established tourism businesses, but Zanzibar is not as universally cashless as Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Carry access to some cash rather than assuming Apple Pay or card will work everywhere.
When paying by card or withdrawing money abroad, also check what foreign-currency fees your UAE bank applies.
Should You Book Airport Transfers Before Arriving?
For a first trip, we recommend it.
After a flight, immigration and baggage collection, you probably do not want your first Zanzibar experience to be negotiating transport outside the airport.
This becomes even more important if you are staying in:
Pwani Mchangani.
Matemwe.
Nungwi.
Kendwa.
Paje.
Or another beach area away from Zanzibar City.
Private airport transfers are included in many Naru packages, so check the specific inclusions when comparing Zanzibar travel packages.
The trip should feel organised from the first hour.
What Is the Biggest Mistake UAE Travellers Make in Zanzibar?
Trying to do too much.
You flew around six hours to leave your normal routine.
Do not recreate that routine with an alarm every morning and a checklist of excursions.
The second major mistake is choosing an area based only on photographs.
Understand:
The coast.
The tide.
The atmosphere.
The hotel.
And the driving distances.
before you book.
Dubai to Zanzibar or Maldives?
They offer different trips.
Choose the Maldives when your priority is primarily the resort, private-island environment, lagoon and a holiday built almost entirely around the property.
Choose Zanzibar when you want the beach plus culture, history, villages, Stone Town, traditional boats and island experiences.
Zanzibar makes more sense when you actually want to leave your hotel and discover somewhere.
Dubai to Zanzibar or Mauritius?
Mauritius generally has more developed island infrastructure and a different resort environment.
Zanzibar often feels less polished outside its resorts, but that is also part of its appeal.
It offers a stronger Swahili and East African cultural identity and can combine naturally with a Tanzania safari.
The better choice depends on whether you are primarily looking for polished island infrastructure or a more distinctive cultural-and-coastal experience.

Naru's UAE-to-Zanzibar Rule
The advantage of Zanzibar from the UAE is not simply that the flight is under six hours.
It is that you can travel somewhere that feels genuinely different without needing a two-week holiday.
Protect that advantage.
Choose the coast carefully.
Choose a hotel you actually want to spend time in.
Understand the tides.
Complete your visa and insurance requirements.
Add a few meaningful Zanzibar experiences.
And leave space.
You do not need to see every beach.
You do not need to stay in three hotels.
You do not need an excursion every morning.
You need enough time to actually feel that you are in Zanzibar.
