Dubai to Zanzibar: Flights, Where to Stay & How Many Days You Need

NARU ZANZIBAR GUIDE

Last updated: September 2026

Zanzibar is closer to Dubai than many travellers realise.

A direct flight from Dubai to Zanzibar takes around 5 hours 40 minutes, making it possible to leave the UAE and be beside the Indian Ocean on the same day.

That changes how we think about Zanzibar.

It does not have to be a once-a-year two-week holiday.

It can work as:

A four-night beach escape.

A five-night couples trip.

A family half-term holiday.

A honeymoon.

A longer seven-night island stay.

Or the beach chapter after a Tanzania safari.

But there is one mistake Naru would avoid:

Travelling five or six hours from Dubai and then spending half of a short Zanzibar trip moving between hotels and sitting in cars.

For travellers coming from the UAE, we prefer a simpler approach.

Choose the right coast.

Choose one excellent hotel.

Add one or two experiences.

And leave enough time to actually feel that you left Dubai.

For the quieter, more refined Zanzibar style Naru often recommends, we would usually begin with Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe.

Here is how we would plan the trip.

Dubai to Zanzibar: The Quick Answer

Are there direct flights from Dubai to Zanzibar?

Yes.

Direct services currently operate between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).

How long is the flight from Dubai to Zanzibar?

The published direct flight time is approximately 5 hours 40 minutes.

Is Zanzibar good for a long weekend from Dubai?

Yes.

Four nights is enough for a focused resort escape if you keep the itinerary simple.

How long should you stay?

For UAE travellers, Naru would think about it like this:

4 nights: short tropical reset.

5 nights: excellent balance for a Dubai beach escape.

6–7 nights: a more complete Zanzibar holiday.

Where should you stay?

For a quieter luxury trip, start with:

Pwani Mchangani — polished resort stays.

Matemwe — slower, more intimate stays.

If direct sea swimming throughout more of the tidal cycle is your absolute priority, compare Kendwa.

Do UAE residents need a visa?

It depends on the passport you travel with, not simply the fact that you live in the UAE.

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Zanzibar has a mandatory inbound visitor-insurance requirement that should be checked separately from your Tanzania visa.

What is the time difference?

Zanzibar is generally one hour behind Dubai.

That makes the adjustment particularly easy for UAE travellers.

Why Zanzibar Works So Well From Dubai

Dubai already gives you extraordinary hotels.

Excellent restaurants.

Pools.

Beach clubs.

Service.

Shopping.

And access to luxury almost everywhere.

So if you are leaving Dubai for Zanzibar, we do not think the goal should simply be:

“Find another five-star hotel beside water.”

Zanzibar should feel different.

The appeal is the combination of:

  • Indian Ocean coastline

  • Swahili culture

  • Stone Town

  • Traditional dhows

  • Tropical landscapes

  • Spice history

  • Slower resort days

  • Ocean experiences

  • A very different rhythm from the UAE

That is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Naru's view

The best Dubai-to-Zanzibar trip should feel like a genuine change of pace within the first day.

That is why we generally prefer quieter coastal areas over putting every traveller into Zanzibar's busiest beach hubs.

Direct Flights From Dubai to Zanzibar

Direct flights are one of the biggest reasons Zanzibar works as a relatively short UAE escape.

Flydubai currently operates direct service between:

Dubai International Airport (DXB)

and

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).

The published direct journey is around 5 hours 40 minutes.

Flight schedules and frequencies can change, so always check the actual timetable for your dates rather than relying on an old article.

Naru's rule

For a four or five-night holiday:

Protect the direct flight where possible.

Adding a connection to save a relatively small amount of money can consume a much larger percentage of a short holiday.

For a ten-night trip, a longer routing may be acceptable.

For four nights, every usable hour matters.

Dubai to Zanzibar Flight Time: What It Means in Practice

A flight time of under six hours puts Zanzibar in an interesting category for UAE travellers.

It is considerably more substantial than a short Gulf break, but still realistic for a long weekend or five-night escape.

And because Zanzibar is only one hour behind Dubai, there is very little time-zone adjustment.

You are not spending the first two days fighting jet lag.

That makes the island particularly useful for short trips.

But count usable days

Do not look only at hotel nights.

Look at:

  • Departure time from Dubai

  • Arrival time in Zanzibar

  • Immigration

  • Baggage

  • Transfer to your hotel

  • Return flight time

  • How early you need to leave the resort

A four-night booking may give you three excellent full days.

Or significantly less.

Naru plans around usable time, not simply the number printed on the booking confirmation.

How Many Nights in Zanzibar From Dubai?

For most UAE travellers, we would recommend four to seven nights, depending on the purpose of the trip.

3 Nights

Possible.

But short.

We would only do this when flights are particularly convenient.

Choose:

One hotel.

One experience at most.

No hotel changes.

The trip needs to be about rest.

4 Nights

This is where Zanzibar becomes a strong Dubai long-weekend or short-break option.

A good structure might be:

Day 1: Arrive and settle.

Day 2: Resort.

Day 3: One signature Zanzibar experience.

Day 4: Resort or a shorter second experience.

Day 5: Depart.

That is enough.

5 Nights

This is one of our favourite lengths for Dubai travellers.

You can have:

  • Several real resort days

  • One ocean experience

  • One cultural or nature experience

  • Enough space not to feel rushed

For a quieter trip, we would strongly compare Pwani Mchangani and Matemwe.

6–7 Nights

This becomes a full Zanzibar holiday rather than simply an escape.

You can stay entirely at one coast.

Or, if Stone Town genuinely interests you, consider:

1–2 nights Stone Town

followed by:

5 nights Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe.

Do not add more hotels simply because you have seven nights.

Read our How Many Days in Zanzibar Guide.

Naru's Dubai Rule: One Excellent Hotel Beats Three Good Hotels

This is particularly important for short UAE trips.

Every hotel move involves:

Packing.

Checkout.

Driving.

Waiting.

Checking in.

Unpacking.

And settling again.

On a ten-night holiday, that may be acceptable.

On a four-night holiday, it can consume a large percentage of your trip.

For 4–5 nights

We would normally choose one hotel.

For 6–7 nights

One hotel can still be perfect.

Or Stone Town plus one coastal property.

For 8 nights or more

A second genuinely different setting becomes easier to justify.

The goal is not to prove that you visited every side of Zanzibar.

It is to enjoy the side you chose.

Where Should You Stay in Zanzibar From Dubai?

For Naru, the starting point is not automatically Nungwi or Kendwa.

The best area depends on the holiday you want.

Pwani Mchangani

Best for a polished resort escape

For many Dubai travellers, Pwani Mchangani would be our first comparison.

Why?

Because it gives you the quality of resort environment UAE travellers often expect while still feeling much quieter and more removed from Dubai.

Properties in the area offer a strong combination of:

  • Resort facilities

  • Pools

  • Dining

  • Beachfront setting

  • Wellness

  • Relaxed days

  • Easy base for selected experiences

The coast is tidal.

That is important.

But if the resort is excellent, the tide becomes part of the rhythm rather than a problem.

Naru's view

If your Dubai trip brief says:

“We want five nights, a beautiful resort, good food and two experiences,”

Pwani Mchangani is one of the first places we would look.

Matemwe

Best for slowing down completely

Matemwe is particularly strong when the reason for leaving Dubai is:

quiet.

This is where we would look for:

Couples.

Honeymooners.

Post-safari travellers.

People who have had a very busy month.

Or anyone who genuinely wants to do less.

The coastline is tidal.

The atmosphere is quieter.

The hotel becomes a meaningful part of the experience.

Naru's view

If Pwani Mchangani feels like a refined resort escape, Matemwe can feel more like a retreat.

For the right traveller, that distinction matters.

Kendwa

Best when swimming is the priority

Kendwa becomes relevant when someone tells us:

“We want to be in the sea whenever possible.”

The northwest coastline generally gives easier access to the water throughout more of the tidal cycle than much of Zanzibar's eastern coast.

You also get west-facing sunsets.

The atmosphere may feel busier than Matemwe or Pwani Mchangani.

That is why Naru sees Kendwa as a specific solution, not the universal best beach.

Nungwi

Best when you want more going on

Nungwi can suit travellers who actively want:

Restaurants.

Activity.

Boats.

More people around.

A livelier beach environment.

For Dubai travellers looking specifically for peace and a complete change of pace, we would usually start elsewhere.

Paje

Best for a more social and active trip

Paje works very differently.

Choose it for:

  • Kitesurfing

  • Cafés

  • Restaurants

  • A social beach atmosphere

  • More independent movement outside the hotel

It can be excellent for friends or active couples.

But if your goal is to escape Dubai and spend five days doing almost nothing, Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe will often suit better.

Read our Where to Stay in Zanzibar Guide.

Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe From Dubai?

This is one of the comparisons we think Dubai travellers should make more often.

Choose Pwani Mchangani if:

  • You want a polished luxury resort

  • Several hotel facilities matter

  • You are travelling with children

  • You want restaurants and resort infrastructure

  • You will spend significant time at the hotel

  • You want a straightforward five-night escape

Choose Matemwe if:

  • You want something quieter

  • You are travelling as a couple

  • You are honeymooning

  • You want fewer distractions

  • You prefer smaller or more intimate properties

  • You are coming after safari

  • The goal is genuinely to switch off

Naru's view

For a first short trip from Dubai, Pwani Mchangani is often the easier all-round choice.

For a romantic or very quiet trip, Matemwe becomes particularly attractive.

What About the Tides?

This is one of the biggest differences between a Dubai beach holiday and staying on Zanzibar's northeast coast.

In Dubai, travellers are used to a beachfront that looks relatively consistent through the day.

Zanzibar's east and northeast coast can behave very differently.

At low tide, the sea may retreat a considerable distance.

Then it returns.

This affects:

  • Pwani Mchangani

  • Matemwe

  • Paje

  • Jambiani

  • Much of the east coast

Do not interpret that as meaning these are bad beaches.

It is simply a different coastal environment.

Naru's rule

Choose your hotel for low tide and the beach for high tide.

If you enjoy the pool, room, restaurants, spa and grounds when the water is farther away, the tide rarely needs to dominate the holiday.

Read our Zanzibar Tides Guide.

When Is the Best Time to Travel From Dubai to Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is warm throughout the year, but rainfall, humidity and wind change seasonally.

For a classic first trip, June through September or into October is one of the strongest periods to compare.

These months are generally drier and less intensely hot.

For Dubai residents who already live through very hot summers, that can feel particularly comfortable.

January and February

Also excellent if you actively want:

Heat.

Warm water.

A very tropical winter escape.

March to May

This is around Zanzibar's main rainy period.

For a short four-night holiday, we would usually prefer a lower-risk weather period if your dates are flexible.

November

Can still work, but rainfall becomes less predictable during the shorter-rain period.

December

Strong for festive travel, but Christmas and New Year can bring:

  • Higher demand

  • Minimum stays

  • Festive dinners

  • Supplements

Book the exact hotel carefully.

Read our Best Time to Visit Zanzibar Guide.

Is Zanzibar Too Hot for Dubai Residents?

Usually, the heat itself will not surprise somebody living in the UAE.

But the type of heat can.

Zanzibar is tropical.

Humidity can be more noticeable, especially during hotter periods.

The experience also differs because you may spend more time:

Walking.

On boats.

Outdoors.

In tropical vegetation.

Rather than moving between highly air-conditioned indoor spaces.

During hotter months, plan cultural activities earlier where possible and use the afternoon for the pool, resort or sea.

Do UAE Residents Need a Visa for Zanzibar?

This is one of the most important questions for Dubai travellers.

The answer depends on your passport nationality.

Not your UAE residence visa.

Not your Emirates ID.

And not simply because your flight leaves Dubai.

Two people living in the same Dubai apartment can have completely different Tanzania visa requirements if they hold different passports.

For example

A UAE citizen.

A British citizen living in Dubai.

An Indian passport holder living in Dubai.

And a traveller holding a passport from a Tanzania referral-visa country.

may all have different immigration requirements.

Naru's rule

Passport first. Residence second.

Check the Tanzania visa requirement for the passport you will actually travel with.

Read our Zanzibar Visa Requirements Guide.

Is Zanzibar Travel Insurance Mandatory From Dubai?

Zanzibar currently has a mandatory inbound visitor-insurance requirement for foreign visitors.

This is separate from:

Your Tanzania visa.

Your UAE health insurance.

Your credit-card insurance.

And any international travel-insurance policy you already hold.

Do not assume your existing Dubai insurance removes the Zanzibar entry requirement.

Check and arrange the current requirement before travelling.

Read our Zanzibar Travel Insurance Guide.

Is Zanzibar Muslim-Friendly for UAE Travellers?

For many Muslim travellers coming from the UAE, Zanzibar can feel culturally comfortable.

The island has a deeply rooted Muslim heritage.

Mosques and the call to prayer are part of everyday local life.

Halal food is widely available.

But international resorts can also serve:

Alcohol.

Pork.

International cuisine.

And food prepared in different kitchen environments.

If halal requirements are important to you, be specific rather than simply assuming every hotel operates identically.

Read our Halal Food in Zanzibar Guide.

Is Zanzibar Good for Families From Dubai?

Yes.

The relatively short direct flight and small time difference make Zanzibar especially interesting for UAE families.

But family hotel choice matters.

For the style of family holiday Naru often plans, we would start with Pwani Mchangani.

Why?

Because a good resort can carry a large part of the holiday.

Pool.

Beach.

Food.

Children's facilities where available.

Then add two or three experiences across the week.

If your children's absolute priority is swimming in the sea throughout more of the day, compare Kendwa as well.

Read our Zanzibar With Kids Guide.

Is Zanzibar Good for a Honeymoon From Dubai?

Very much so.

It works particularly well if you want something that feels more culturally and geographically distinct than simply travelling to another city resort.

For a Naru honeymoon, we would usually begin with:

Matemwe for privacy and slower days.

Or:

Pwani Mchangani for a more complete luxury resort environment.

Then add experiences carefully.

A dhow sail.

An ocean day.

A cultural experience.

A special dinner.

You do not need a honeymoon itinerary that starts at 8am every morning.

Read our Zanzibar Honeymoon Guide.

Is Zanzibar Good for a Girls' Trip From Dubai?

Yes.

And we would plan it differently from a honeymoon.

A group may want:

  • A villa or multi-room resort arrangement

  • Private transfers

  • Dhow sailing

  • Ocean experiences

  • Stone Town

  • Good food

  • Photos

  • A beach picnic

  • Spa time

  • Several free resort days

If the group wants more social beach activity, Paje or Nungwi may enter the conversation.

If it wants a polished private resort experience, we would look more closely at Pwani Mchangani.

Is Zanzibar Good for a Solo Trip From Dubai?

Yes.

But decide what style of solo trip you want.

Quiet solo reset

Look at Matemwe or Pwani Mchangani.

Social solo trip

Paje may give you more cafés, movement and opportunities to be around other travellers.

Culture-heavy solo trip

Consider Stone Town plus the coast.

Solo does not automatically mean you need to stay somewhere busy.

Sometimes travelling alone is exactly when quiet becomes most valuable.

What Should You Do on a 4-Night Zanzibar Trip From Dubai?

Keep it simple.

Day 1 — Dubai to Zanzibar

Fly.

Arrive.

Private transfer.

Check in.

Dinner.

Nothing scheduled.

Day 2 — Resort

Do not leave.

This is intentional.

Day 3 — One Signature Zanzibar Experience

Choose based on what matters to you.

For example:

An ocean experience.

Dhow sailing.

Stone Town.

Or another curated island experience.

Day 4 — Resort + Optional Short Experience

Either stay completely free or choose something that does not consume the entire day.

Day 5 — Depart

That is enough.

You travelled to Zanzibar to experience Zanzibar.

Not to complete it.

What Should You Do on a 5-Night Zanzibar Trip From Dubai?

Five nights gives you a much better balance.

Day 1

Arrive and settle.

Day 2

Resort day.

Day 3

Ocean or signature Naru experience.

Day 4

Completely free.

Day 5

Culture, nature or another shorter experience.

Day 6

Departure.

This is one of our preferred structures for a short UAE escape.

What About 7 Nights?

At seven nights, you have more choice.

You can spend the whole week at Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe and have an excellent trip.

Or:

1–2 nights Stone Town

then:

5–6 nights coast.

What we would not automatically do is add:

Stone Town.

Nungwi.

Paje.

Matemwe.

All because the trip lasts one week.

More locations do not automatically create more holiday.

Should Dubai Travellers Stay in Stone Town?

It depends on why you are coming.

For four nights, we would generally keep one coastal hotel unless Stone Town is one of your main priorities.

For seven nights, one or two nights in Stone Town can work very well.

It creates contrast.

Dubai is modern and highly planned.

Stone Town is layered, historic, walkable and very different.

That contrast can be one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

But you do not need to sleep there simply to experience it.

A focused visit can also work.

Dubai vs Zanzibar Beaches: What Feels Different?

Dubai beaches tend to be comparatively controlled environments.

Zanzibar is more natural and more variable.

You will notice:

Tides.

Traditional boats.

Reef flats.

Fishermen.

Seaweed farming in some coastal areas.

Weather changes.

Marine conditions.

Local communities close to tourism areas.

That difference is part of the point.

If you expect Zanzibar to behave exactly like a Dubai resort beach with different palm trees, you may misunderstand what makes it special.

What Should You Pack From Dubai?

Most travellers do not need anything complicated.

Think about:

  • Lightweight clothing

  • Swimwear

  • Sun protection

  • Hat

  • Comfortable sandals or footwear

  • More modest clothing for Stone Town and villages

  • Insect repellent

  • Necessary medication

  • Travel adaptor

  • Copies of important documents

  • Insurance confirmation

  • Visa documents where required

If your hotel is high-end, do not overpack for the resort.

Zanzibar generally suits lighter, relaxed clothing.

What Should Women Wear in Zanzibar?

Resort and beach environments are generally relaxed.

Outside those areas, remember Zanzibar's strong Swahili and Muslim culture.

For Stone Town, villages and public local spaces, Naru recommends more modest clothing.

A simple practical approach is to cover shoulders and knees when away from the resort beach environment.

You do not need to dress heavily.

Lightweight clothing works well in the tropical climate.

How Much Does a Zanzibar Trip From Dubai Cost?

There is no useful single number.

A Zanzibar holiday can vary enormously depending on:

  • Flight dates

  • Hotel

  • Room category

  • Meal plan

  • Number of nights

  • Private vs shared experiences

  • Transfers

  • Festive supplements

  • Whether you add Stone Town

  • Whether you combine safari

This is exactly why Naru prefers travel styles and packages rather than pretending one headline price describes Zanzibar.

A four-night hotel-only trip and a seven-night private honeymoon are not the same product.

Compare the whole experience.

Cheap Zanzibar Package or Tailored Trip?

Both have a place.

A low-cost package may work if your priority is simply:

Flight.

Hotel.

Transfer.

Beach.

But look beyond the headline price.

Ask:

Which hotel?

Which coast?

Which room?

Which meal plan?

Private or shared transfers?

Which experiences?

How many people per tour?

What happens if weather changes?

Does the itinerary leave any free time?

Naru's view

The cheapest Zanzibar package is only good value if it gives you the Zanzibar trip you actually want.

What Makes Naru Different for Dubai-to-Zanzibar Trips?

We do not think somebody living in Dubai needs another generic travel package containing:

Three-star hotel.

Shared transfer.

Five tours.

And a schedule copied for everyone.

We start with:

How many nights do you have?

What kind of hotel do you like?

Quiet or social?

Couple, family, solo or group?

How important is swimming?

Do you want Stone Town?

How much do you actually want to do?

What is your budget?

Then we build from there.

For many Dubai travellers, that means:

Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe.

One strong hotel.

Private transfers.

A few carefully selected experiences.

And enough unplanned time for Zanzibar to feel completely different from home.

Naru Dubai Traveller Match

“We Have 4 Nights and Just Want to Escape Dubai”

Choose one resort in Pwani Mchangani.

One experience.

Mostly resort time.

“We're a Couple and Want Complete Quiet”

Start with Matemwe.

“We're Taking the Children for 5 Nights”

Start with Pwani Mchangani and choose the resort before choosing the activities.

“We're Honeymooning”

Compare Matemwe and Pwani Mchangani.

Choose the room and privacy level carefully.

“We Want to Swim in the Sea as Much as Possible”

Compare Kendwa.

“We Want Cafés and a Social Atmosphere”

Consider Paje.

“We Want to See Everything”

Stay longer.

Do not turn four nights into seven days of activities squeezed into half the time.

“We Have 7 Nights”

Either enjoy one excellent coast properly or combine Stone Town with Pwani Mchangani or Matemwe.

Common Mistakes Dubai Travellers Make in Zanzibar

Booking too much

You do not need an excursion every day.

Choosing a hotel because it is five-star

Location matters.

Automatically staying in Nungwi because every package advertises it

Choose the coast that suits you.

Being surprised by east-coast tides

Understand them before booking.

Moving hotels during a four-night trip

Usually unnecessary.

Assuming UAE residence decides your visa requirement

Your passport is the starting point.

Forgetting Zanzibar's mandatory insurance

Visa and insurance are separate.

Comparing Zanzibar resorts directly with Dubai hotels

The point of travelling is partly to experience something different.

Booking the cheapest flight with a long connection

For a short trip, lost time can be more expensive than the airfare saving.

Filling every day because “we're only there for five nights”

That is precisely when free time becomes more valuable.

A package can make sense if it combines the right hotel, transfers and experiences for your travel style.

Do not choose purely from the headline price.

The Naru Dubai-to-Zanzibar Rule

The biggest advantage of travelling to Zanzibar from Dubai is not simply that the flight is under six hours.

It is that you can experience somewhere that feels genuinely different without needing a two-week holiday.

But that only works if you protect your time.

Choose the coast carefully.

For many Naru travellers:

Pwani Mchangani for polished resort relaxation.

Matemwe for quiet and retreat.

Then choose the hotel.

Add one or two experiences.

Understand the tides.

Complete the visa and insurance requirements.

And stop.

You do not need to see every part of Zanzibar.

You need enough time to actually feel that you are there.
